Let’s face it, all interviews are stressful. Here are a few tips for a successful interview:
1) Research your prospective employer: Research the company website and learn as much as you can about the company, its products or services and/or technology before any job interview. Make a list of questions about the company that you can ask during the interview process.
2) Arrive for the interview at least 15 minutes early: Be prepared to fill out additional paperwork and possibly a job application. Make sure you turn off your cell phone while you are in the company’s office so you are not disturbing anyone.
3) Dressing for the Interview: Remember that first impressions you make on a prospective employer is the most important one. Always dress professionally for all job interviews.
4) Enthusiasm: When you start your interview, you have this one chance to really sell yourself. If you go into an interview thinking its not the best opportunity for you, but you need a job, it will show. Make every effort to be enthusiastic and positive. Your interviewer’s first impression sometimes is the deciding factor whether you go further in the interview process.
5) Be prepared to ask interview questions: Your questions will show your interest in their opportunity.
6) Never ask about salary or benefits during your first interview. Show that you are more interested in their opportunity and the future rather than a salary. Salary and benefits are usually negotiated with the job offer. Your recruiter would not be presenting you to the company without properly matching your salary expectations with the salary range offered for the position.
7) Be prepared to answer difficult questions: Think about answers to some of the usual interview questions, such as:
8) Always end an interview asking the interviewer if there was anything you discussed that needs clarification or any questions they might have about your background that would cause them to hesitate to hire you. This is your chance to sell yourself.
9) Always follow up with a thank card or letter. Before you leave any interview, ask for a business card for each person that interviews you. This shows sincere interest and also gives you an opportunity to follow up with a thank you card or letter. Hiring Managers prefer hand written thank you notes. Always write thank you letters within 24 hours of each interview. Address any issues and concerns and reinforce the fact that you want the job. View your thank you letter as a sales letter selling yourself. Always customize your letter to the company rather than using a general template.
10) Call your recruiter immediately following the interview. We want your feedback. We will also contact the prospective employer to find out their feedback on your interview.
